Description

Letter from Hafodunos Hall, Wales, thanking EJR for her account of Kate [Roget]. She reports that she enjoyed her stay in Dolgelley [Dolgellau] and Snowdonia, and is now a guest of Mr Sandbach 'in as wild and remote a situation as can be imagined'. She is looking forward to the opening of 'the Liverpool chapel' [Hope Street Church].

Hafodunos
Saturday Morning

Dearest Mrs Reid,

Many, very thanks for your letter. I was most thankful to receive it, for it was my first account of dear Kate since Dr Rogets & I must look upon it as favourable. I must send you a few lines for I remember that my last was written in much purturbation of spirit an hour after receiving the sad news, & I must have given you an uncomfortable impression of my state of mind altogether. We had a most charming time at Dolgelley after you left us discovering fresh beauties each day [page 2] and our first unpleasant impression so completely [crossed out?] left us that we could hardly make up our minds to move on to another station.

Since leaving however we have had some very great enjoyment. the magnificent scenery of the Snowdon range surpassed my expectations.but some cold wet weather made us rather anxious about Mamma and I was not sorry to find myself safe at the end of our mountain rambles. Mamma is now at Farmfield and I am under a comfortable hospitable roof tho in as wild & [?] a situation as can be well imagined. Mr Sandbach has an estate several miles in extent which he farms chiefly himself and is doing much to improve. Yesterday we walked [page 3] six miles across the moors & had a magnificant view of the whole Snowdon range. As to my visits in Lancashire it would be impossible for me to omit them without hurting my good relatives feelings but I shall make them as few & as short as I can. At Farmfield (my Aunts’) I am a quiet as possible. And I shall not stay long behind Mamma.

Now do dearest Mrs Reid when youI have nothing else to do - on Sunday perhaps.&- write me a little billet about Bedford Sq. tell me if you are satisfied, how many pupils you have, & which of the lectures are best. The Liverpool chapel opening is just off a fortnight & that I shall be there after all. I hear there is a cross on the spire the former evangelists on the roof [page 4] with their eagles bulls lions & c and the emblems of the passion carved in the pillars within. So I was right in calling it a cathedral.

I dreamt both night that you & I were setting out together for Italy - and am now, after breakfast , hardly reconciled to Wales.

With love to Miss Sturch and yourself .

Believe me, Dear Mrs Reid.
Yours ever affectionate
E A Bostock
